Learn About questions

What are the challenges of growing up with more than one cultural heritage? What are the benefits of growing up with more than one cultural heritage? What is the Hidatsa “order” for giving things away? What are the Arikara ways of giving?

Learn From questions

Have I ever had a teacher who was really still a learner? How did I know? Whom do I go to when I need some wisdom? How do I listen to that person differently? Are there special ceremonies or traditional gatherings or practices that I attend? What are they? How does my participation in these shape my identity? Does learning ever end? Why or why not?

Growing up in both Arikara and Hidatsa you know and respecting both ways my mom was a tots and my dad was a wrecker uh and sometimes you know you would see the tribalistic things kind of go on around you like all those those people from up there are all those people from down there you’re just like hey wait I’m both you know but having that respect for your mom and dad you know and learning that structure because of one day you know they’re not going to be here so having an understanding of the clan ship of asking questions you know we still have a lot of elders that are there a lot of you know like a lot of auntie’s and I’m going to probably say a lot of auntie’s you know that are still there that are able to you know show me you don’t think my these these clients ship of how you give away you know you know you in this in this they’re in this and then her dots a way that there’s a structure that you know do you just don’t randomly give to people you know there’s there’s this clan ship there’s this order that you give things away in you know and my wife has always you know made sure that I learned that because of my you know of our little ones and of our of our children and we always made it important to you know just sit down and just kind of listen you know you may not know what’s going on but just listen and you know when then when you walk away it’s always and you know it’ll always be in your mind of knowing that and an understanding this the Arikara way being able to give to some societies and there was a little structure of that you know and knowing you know to separate them you know so you know even today everything’s still a learning process you know I’m not guess I know everything and I don’t know everything but as a teacher it’s always important to ask questions you know and even if it’s for thid near students you know and letting that glit and sometimes letting your guard down and and showing and say well how you don’t really how do you know how do you sing that song you know or what does that song really mean you know in you know the war would say geez mr.Fox you don’t know that I’m like do I don’t you know let me know and stuff and then so then you would be able to share it you know if that understand your understanding his understanding it and then the kids that are around you would say well kind of he knows that maybe you know you know that then the singing the cultural piece of F dancing of going to pow wows going to may trees maybe ceremonies you know became kind of important to them you know just to make sure that they were exposed to it you know saying well mr.Fox was talking about this I’m gonna go check it out you know I’m gonna go see you know and then they’d come back and they’d you know talk to me and they would say this is this is what happened and so I think that was the most important piece but once again it was it was never planned it was always just this is what it was
