Watch this interview on YouTube[Music] our people my people have been the most documented most written about most photographed than any other ethnic group in America a lot of that was done by somebody else it was always an angle to it well the true angle is now here with this essential understanding is this is the true story we all live in the same space and we share this same space in the same time and it’s important to know who we are as North Dakotans what was this land like how did it exist before it was settled before you know the Pioneers came in a sense you’re unlearning some of the old stereotypes and now you’re relearning true history the key areas that I feel are really important are the elder interviews and they’re from across all of our North Dakota tribes I would love to see it implemented statewide because I think every kid in the state and every teacher named state in the state needs to be exposed to their state culture and this is a perfect Avenue to expose those kids to that state culture and it’s in a fun the hands-on way it really brings together that culturally responsive curriculum and ensuring that we’re meeting the needs of our Native American students as well as providing an awareness across the district whether it’s Native American students or not but just knowing that our culture of North Dakota and the tribes of North Dakota is there and available I guess my hope is that we can integrate those understandings as integrated throughout the curriculum it’s it’s something that I think teachers once they realize that it’s not something extra or something more I think they’re more willing to you know to implement them in their classrooms a lot of times teachers feel a little bit maybe uncomfortable teaching about Native American culture and history because they’re just not sure but you know that’s the Eldar interviews [Music] [Music] that’s playing from here you know it’s gonna relate to stronger identity of who we are you know more pride in the fact that you know God made you who you are you know creator you know created something beautiful and how good is that you know that’s a blessing so when we think about this year’s kindergarten students learning the full rich background and history of their entire history of the state of North Dakota before it was even a state when we were the Dakota Territory even previous to that then those kindergarteners will end up someday to be our city mayors and our city councilmen our elected leaders in the legislature our county commissioners [Music] [Music] you
