Proposed Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings and Standards Summary of Changes 1. Adjustment of language for clarity, inclusivity, and useability • Increased representation of Dakota and Nakota language and references in addition to Lakota language and references • Increased use of indigenous language where possible • Change of references to “resilience” to simply, “strength” • More indigenous language pronunciation help included • Change of Song on OSEU 2 to “Dakota Flag Song” • Adjusted titles of Understandings 2, 3, 4, 7 2. Addition of several new standards and adjustments to others for clarity, corrections and to increase the depth of knowledge of the Understandings. Including, but not limited to, the following standards and corresponding differentiated approaches: • 1.2, 1.7 • 2.4 • 3.1, 3.3, 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, 3.8 • 4.3 • 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6 • 6.2, 6.3, 6.4, 6.5, 6.6, 6.7, 6.8 • 7.1, 7.3, 7.4 3. Reorganizing of content for clarity and useability • All content for each OSEU is located together in this order: o Understandings (The core, indigenous Elder-developed center of this document) o Standards (Elder and educator-developed applications of each understanding) o Extended Description Summaries (bullet points from the full extended descriptions) o Resource Tables for Teaching (developed by Elders and indigenous culture-bearers) o Songs (Selected and translated by the original Elder team) o Full Original Extended Description (from the original OSEU document) • Appendices located at the end in this order: (*updated or new) o Appendix 1 A History of the Development of the Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings o Appendix 2 Oceti Sakowin (Seven Council Places) o Appendix 3 The Tintanton or Teton o Appendix 4: *Map of South Dakota Reservations o Appendix 5: *Current Locations of Oceti Sakowin Bands o Appendix 6: *Treaties Impacting the Oceti Sakowin Oyate o Appendix 7: *Tribal Colleges and Universities o Appendix 8: *OSEU Glossary of Terms o Appendix 9: OSEU Bibliography o Appendix 10: *Additional State Resources 4.
