07 Kevin Finley: Be Proud of Who You Are
Watch this interview on YouTubeA long time ago and it’s not very long ago our native people never emulated anybody we were who we were because we were pet it was handed down be proud of who you are just like in every race be proud of who you are know where you come from so when you get in a place like this you know what you’re talking about but today with the TV and all of the attention being put on rap music the black gray the black race we see a lot of our kids emulating that the sports heroes a lot of them are black people and I’m not a I’m not a racist by any means but we now we see our kids emulating that wearing their pants hanging way down low and trying to have all four tattoos and things like that and even talking like them even wanting to talk like black people it but when we are growing up if you had used you if you had and teasing even teasing in our in our culture if you when you tease you’d be really careful because in our way teasing was a way of correcting teasing was a way of teaching you know not belittling or making fun of anybody but we’ve all got to remember that when we tease it’s a way of correcting when somebody’s doing something wrong but um with so we would get teased butter pathway if we had that and just be just kids are not really knowing what the client system is we are so fortunate we have Charlie teaching these in here because our clients there are strict ways and our clients too strict rules that you follow there’s people you can tease people you can you can’t we’re not you supposed to look at our mother-in-law’s well so look at them and Charlie can probably tell you more than that I don’t want to say anymore because I don’t know I know that for sure though that way we’re not supposed to and our mother in-laws aren’t we’re aren’t supposed to talk to you I don’t know if I can’t remember itself son-in-law or daughter-in-law but I know my mother-in-law I’m married to a sue and she’s not supposed to talk to me although she did she’s not supposed to things are changing times change you know like I said I’m not no know why people do things or anything no expert on that but I do know that our kids they’re I don’t know how many kids in this in this class in this school could get on a horse or even saddle it up or even put a bridle on it anymore for my dad and my mom and them that’s how they got to school my dad don’t want this stuff and which was from Mandurah it’s down in South Dakota they went on a wagon that’s how they got there threw a bunch of hay in the back and loaded up the boys all his brother his name went to Stefan I went to boarding school and then you know the story of the boarding school that’s where a lot of things that they were stripped of a lot of things so the way they did things how their morning started for me it’s it’s the same I have that discipline I’ll get up every morning and read my Bible or read my daily passages and I get to work I do the same thing and I’m just prayer throughout the day and praying about everything you know and I don’t I don’t go and go to any human before I before I ask God about it first which way should I go here back then it was the same when you read the when I read the books about the way didn’t Penix could birthday Indian or he Delia they go to the Creator about everything but we don’t have that too much anymore you know here with my athletes there was a time when I prayed with him before and after games I had a parent that really came down on me so I just backed off you know it’s um I don’t need to I don’t like to feel like I’m forcing anything got any on our kids but even in on the sidelines in football and basketball and I’m really not sure I’ll just ask God right and in there should I do here so it’s just a deep belief a deep conviction and it goes all the way back to how we live in my great-great-grandpa and I’m stays it was the same when I read the books they always called on other people then they would get up get a big meeting together such as the one that okay who’s gonna get this bundle from here his dad’s gone a grandpa uncle or somebody’s gone it’s the same so they both emulate the same thing
